Orthopaedic Post-Operative Autotransfusion System

Orthopaedic post-op autotransfusion consists of collecting blood shed from the surgical wound drainages and its transfusion after filtration

ORTHO P.A.S. (ORTHOpaedic Post-operative Autotransfusion System) was optimized in order to respond to the specific needs relative to the recovery of blood from orthopaedic surgical wounds following an operation.

ORTHO P.A.S. is a system consisting of a disposable kit and a multipurpose micro aspiration unit, VACUUM GENERATOR.

The VACUUM GENERATOR allows maintaining aspiration within values selected and set by the operator. The vacuum oscillation, i.e. alternating between high and low vacuums, facilitates haemostasis of the wound without the risk of formation of haematomas.

The ORTHO P.A.S. device was conceived to allow direct reinfusion of the recovered blood by means of the closed-circuit technique.

Thanks to a sterilizing membrane, both entry of non-sterile air in the recovery circuit and contamination of the non-disposable components are prevented, caused by the possible presence of viral and/or bacterial agents in the aspirated blood.

During recovery, only briefly suspending aspiration but without disconnecting the device, the blood recovered can be translated from the reservoir to the reinfusion bag and from here be reinfused with the filter for microaggregates, GOCCIA. Thus there is a closed circuit between the aspiration system and the reinfusion system, which allows reinfusing the blood simultaneously with its recovery, furnishing a high guarantee against contamination risks caused by repeated connections and disconnections.

The blood filtration system is highly selective. Already in the collection reservoir there is a 120 µm (filtering septum macrofiltration), while a 40 µm microfiltration is carried out during reinfusion with the GOCCIA filter. Effective filtering is important since any clots or microclots which form during blood collection must be removed quickly in order not to harm the patient undergoing reinfusion (e.g. pulmonary microembolism caused by microaggregates in circulation).

The ORTHO P.A.S. device presents a supernatant separator wich prevents reinfusion of any lipidic particles aspirated.

The device, being made up of parts with unlimited use (VACUUM GENERATOR) and of a disposable recovery and transfusion kit, is extremely practical. The combination of parts with unlimited use and disposable parts, a unique device in this category, make the post-operative autotransfusional practice performed with ORTHO P.A.S. particularly cost-efficient, since only the “essential disposable” is discarded.

With ORTHO P.A.S. also the environment is protected by avoiding thermodestruction and/or battery dispersion.
